Locating The Most Suitable Set of Golf Clubs

By: Justin Flowers

The quest for the best set of golf clubs isn't easy. Given the incredible selection of golf clubs for sale now, making a selection can be hard. There are new advancements in materials and design almost every day, and they each come with a promise to transform your game. Having the perfect set of golf clubs can be critical to your personal performance on the golf course. The perfect set of golf clubs can give you the poise and the skill to play to the best of your ability.

New golfers who are searching for a starter set of golf clubs should think about buying good-quality clubs on the second hand market instead of settling for cheap new clubs. It would also be advisable to get suggestions from a golf coach. But, even after you've gotten advice and considered all the golf club reviews, there are several personal factors to consider. Your own size, shape, strength and method of play should be considered when selecting golf clubs.

A standard set of golf clubs is composed of irons, woods and a putter. Irons are are designated with numbers from two through nine. Faces of the irons are angled to apply lift. A number two iron has a lift angle of 18°, and the angle is increased by four degrees for every successive iron. As the numbers increase, the golf clubs get shorter; that is, the shaft of a two iron is longer than the shaft of a nine iron. Woods are numbered from one through five. The general rule is that lower numbered clubs hit the ball farther, but at a lower angle. In addition to extra lift, higher numbered clubs also give the ball more backspin.

Let us talk about the irons. Traditional irons concentrate the weight of the club behind the middle of the head. This design creates what is known as the sweet spot, the perfect spot on the club to hit the ball. Traditional irons are preferred by many golf pros because they are more accurate and easy to control. However, if you don't hit the golf ball exactly on the sweet spot, these golf clubs are positively pitiless.

It's now also possible to find irons with a peripheral weight design. They are also known as cavity-backed golf clubs. The weight is spread evenly around the edges, which increases the effective hitting area of the golf club. Cavity-backed golf clubs are much friendlier to new golfers. They are mainly intended for beginners or inconsistent players. However, cavity-backed clubs can also be found on the pro golf tour as well. So if this design really works well for you, don't let the name "game improvement" club scare you away.

Woods are called that because they were conventionally constructed of wood. Woods are designed for initial drives or for long fairway shots. Traditional wooden drivers are still preferred by many golf pros. Unfortunately, much like conventional irons, these woods are very unforgiving if your contact with the ball isn't perfect. For this reason, woods made of metal now dominate the amateur game. Today's woods are constructed with hollow shells that give greater distribution of weight. The only drawback of these new designs is that it may be more difficult to shape or control the ball. Graphite heads offer the highest performance, but also have the highest price.

How much the shafts bend or flex varies among golf clubs from soft to stiff. In general, stronger players who are more proficient at the game should choose stiffer shafts. Most golf club shafts are made out of graphite or steel.

Putters are without a doubt the most personal item in the bag of golf clubs. Putters range from very plain to exotic designs. If you buy a complete set of golf clubs, it will probably come with a basic putter. After you'd played a little, you'll want to replace this standard putter for one that's more compatible with your playing style. Finding a putter that matches you best may take some trial and error. But once you get some experience on the course and know what sort of feel you want, you should be able to find one that is right for you.
