Location impacts the premiums for automobile, home and medical insurance

By: Alston J. Balkcom

It may seem unfair but it is true that your cost for insurance can be affected by the town you live in.
The state you live in, the municipality and even the zip code can be a factor on help or hurt you when it comes to pricing for insurance. The number of people per square mile, theft statistics and amount of snowfall can impact the aggregate cost of claims an insurance company believes it will pay and therefore often makes a huge difference in the amount you pay for your insurance policies.
The types of coverage most impacted by where you live include:

Car Insurance

People have more automobile accidents in geographic areas where there are more vehicles and people per square mile. Additional autos, means more cars to have accidents with and more vehicles that can have accidents with you. What this means is the car insurance company has to write more checks for claims and the rest of us pay more in monthly premiums. The number of car thefts in a given area also has an impact. Even the amount of rain and snow fall impacts car insurance premiums.

House insurance

Home owners insurance is also impacted by Mother Nature. Those living in hurricane zones are really hurt by this. Other weather events have an impact on insurance prices as well. Ice, wind and low temperatures increase claims and therefore insurance premiums for home insurance.
The cost of rebuilding and repairing homes in a city is yet another factor that makes prices for insurance go upward or downward. If building materials have higher prices or the cost of labor is higher in your town verses the one next door, your prices may be much higher.

Apartment insurance

The crime rate can make a big difference in what we pay to cover our apartments. Theft is one of the major things that an apartment renters insurance contract protects you against and therefore if there are more break-ins in your area your renters insurance carrier may pass those costs on to their policy holders.

Medical insurance

Location has less to do with the frequency of illness and accidents than it has to do with the cost of that treatment. The cost to set a broken bone on your leg in a little town in Wyoming will be much less than the price to set the same leg in Manhattan. In areas where doctors cost more, insurance costs more. Insurance carriers may charge the resident of the more expensive area more for their policies.

What to Do?

Of course no one expects you to change your residence solely based on the cost of your insurance premiums. However, when you are looking for your next home, you should take this into account along with the other factors one would generally consider about when selecting your next home.
Tell your story to agent who works with people in an area that you are thinking about living in and ask them to estimate prices for different insurance coverages. The insurance lines ones that are most affected by location are vehicle, home, renters and health coverage.
Often, a more expensive property will have lower insurance costs. This can mean that your family can afford to live in a place to live that you may not have thought you could.
