MP3 Players: Indispensable to the Modern Man

By: Kris Saelen

MP3 players have become a ubiquitous part of the lifestyle of the modern generation whether at work, in school, or in any area of one's everyday activities. MP3 players, so to speak, have become indispensable to the modern man.
MP3 players are small portable gadgets used for playing audio files called MP3s. The first MP3 player called MPMan was produced by Saehan. The MPMan was introduced in Asia in the spring of 1998 and not long after, it was marketed as Eiger Labs MPMan F10/F20 in the United States during the summer of the same year. Modern MP3 players that have become mainstream and globally known include MP3 players produced by Apple (iPod), SanDisk, Sony, Diamond Multimedia (Rio) and other brands.
MP3 players are generally handy which normally measure around 1 inch wide and just a few inches in height. MP3 players with built-in batteries typically measure less than 1 inch although there are some players that have more depth. Different types of MP3 players have varying weights but the average MP3 player weighs less than 28 grams or 1 ounce. MP3 players are frequently played through ear phones but at other times the player may also be attached to an audio system or speakers.
The more sophisticated MP3 players may include other functions and offer unique features such as games, ebook reading, recording, viewing for photos and videos, audio, time functions which includes calendar and alarm, cell phone usage, and even Internet services.
Different kinds of MP3 players have different types of power supply. There are MP3 players with built-in lithium batteries which are recharged by plugging the MP3 player into a computer's USB port while other MP3 players have AC or DC adapters for recharging, especially those with internal batteries. There are also MP3 player types that make use of regular batteries like AAA batteries.
Aside from the batteries, MP3 players vary according to the type of memory used for storing MP3 files. Some MP3 players have a miniature hard drive called micro drive which is internal to the player while a few MP3 players utilize internal flash memory cards for file storage. Other MP3 player types make use of memory cards as extension memory. MP3 players can hold thousands upon thousands of standard-size songs depending on the memory storage which could range from 1 GB to 32 GB capacities. MP3 files are commonly uploaded to the MP3 player through a flash memory or USB card, or by connecting the external card to the computer.
