Make it Feel like Summer All Year with a Mini Vacation

By: Ben Needles

For you and your family, getting away from work for a vacation is priceless. However, vacations can be difficult to make happen due to time and money constraints. It may seem hopeless to be able to take a week or two off when you are busy closing an important deal or working on a big presentation, but perhaps you need to think outside the box. Donât think a vacation can only be a week off of work, but start thinking of each weekend as an opportunity to have a mini-vacation. Such excursions will cost less money and take away less time from your job, but will still give you the satisfaction of having a day or two to do something fun.

There are many opportunities to take your family on mini vacations weekends around your home. Start looking for things you would not normally do in order to make the mini vacation something special. For example, if you plan on going somewhere to which you could drive, take a train instead. This will be a unique experience as well as save you money on gas. Also, you will be helping the environment by not driving, giving you an extra bonus.

When looking for places to visit for your weekend getaway, there is no need to look very far. Stay in a hotel a few miles from your home and explore your city as if you were a tourist. Your kids will get a thrill from staying in a hotel for a night, even if it is only a few miles away. Also, youâll get to know your own city better and find things you never knew existed there.

If you donât have kids, or would like to get away without them, try a bed and breakfast with your spouse. This will allow for a cozier atmosphere and more personal service. Try finding a place near a vineyard. You can explore the grounds, learn about the wine making process and do some wine tasting. This leads to a relaxing day with your loved one.

Other places you may want to visit could also be close to your home. Even if you donât have a beach nearby, there may be a lake you can visit to enjoy similar aquatic fun. If you donât feel like sun bathing on the lakeâs shores, you can take a ferry to one of its islands and spend the day looking around. Also, you could rent a boat for the day and try snorkeling depending on the type of lake you find.

National parks can also be a point of attraction for you and your family. In order to see the whole park, stay in a cabin in the woods nearby. This will be yet another way to make the visit more special for your family. Bring cards and sâmore fixings and turn the weekend into a camping experience without the uncomfortable problems of tents. Usually you can also fish, canoe, kayak or go horseback riding in such parks as well.

Taking your family on a bike ride is another great weekend activity. Find a bike path near you or try mapping out your own route. Prepare a picnic and leave it in your car as you ride. The meal at the end will be much appreciated and a nice finish.

Doing some of these fun (and cheap!) activities will give you the fun you can find in a week long vacation. If you feel like the Saturday and Sunday is just too short, ask for Friday or Monday off and use a long weekend to make your trip more enjoyable. Also, try to get the entire family involved. Ask your kids and spouse which activities they would prefer to ensure the trip is fun for all. Check out travel sites or AAA for more ideas as well great discounts for your weekend getaways. The best part is these getaways wonât make you wait till summer â mini vacations can happen at any time!
