The joy of moving is close to that of doing your taxes. The only thing worse besides death would have to be moving on April 15th! The following advice will make your move less miserable. 1. The First Step in Packing The first packing step you should take is to get a large garbage bag or can. It is time for some discipline. As you are packing, toss your junk. Hey, you wont have to carry it? 2. Packing Books Books are wonderful reading, but a nightmare to move. Instead of filling boxes with them, put a couple in the bottom of all your boxes. Then create a base for the other stuff and you avoid incredibly heavy boxes. 3. When to Start Packing Once you decide to move, when should you start packing? NOW! You have more than you think and you will also end up reminiscing about things as you dig them out of closets and such. 4. Dealing with Email We have all come to rely on the Internet, which can be a problem when we move. You may be unconnected for some time, so you need to consider your email. The best solution is to open a free Yahoo email account. 5. Turning Off Utilities When you move, turning off the utilities is one of those things that must be done. Just make sure you set the date for after you have moved and cleaned. Many people turn them off too early and cannot clean their places. 6. Professional Cleaners If you are moving out of a rental, professional cleaners are worth their weight in gold. Hire them if you want to get your deposit back. 7. Packing Stuff in Drawers If you have stuff in drawers, leave the stuff in. Remove the drawer and carry it like a box. Wrap a couple large rubber bands around it if you need to. 8. Forwarding Mail When You Move It is easy to pop down to the post office to forward your mail, but be careful. It can add a couple weeks to the process or receiving it. With bills, this can be a nightmare. Contact creditors directly with the new address. 9. Big Furniture Planning Before you pack up and move something big and heavy, give some thought to your new house. Specifically, where are you going to put it and how are you going to get it in there? 10. Moving Hanging Clothes We all have clothes hanging in our closets. When it comes time to move them, dont take them off the hangers. Just bunch them up and put a big trash bag over them to protect them for the move. As a general rule, time spent moving should be off limits. Spouses and friends should agree that anything nasty said during the move will not be held against anyone! Yep, it is that fun and marriages have practically ended while doing it.
