Autocratic management style is where the manager will actually give the employees instructions by just telling them what to do rather than asking and receiving feedback from employees opinions. There is only the manager who is making the decisions there is no sense of communication between the whole team. Consultative management style is when the management will consult the employee’s opinions before making any decisions. Democratic management style is one that involves empowerment. The employees are given the responsibility to make decisions along side the management. Laissez-faire management style is when the manager allows the employees to take responsibility on their own accord. There is small amount of input from the manager and the employees get on with jobs they feel are needed to be done. The manager at Warehouse was interviewed and asked which style that she feels she has adopted. The manager explained that she has an autocratic style. As she gathers the daily tasks that need doing and passes on daily tasks for each member of the team that is in for that day. From observation of the management style at Warehouse from working there part time I agree that the manager has an autocratic style, because there is a lack of feedback between the manager and the team this means that there is no strong communication. This usually results in the deputy manager being called upon to discuss queries with rather than going to the manager. I feel that the manager also shares a part of the Laissez-faire style because once the daily tasks are completed by the employee; the employee is expected to just get on with something else such as size ordering because the manager has no more tasks that need to be completed. There is no sense of motivation for the member of the team or structure in the way that they should work. The deputy manager was also interviewed on which management style that he thinks he has adopted. The manager quoted that he has a democratic style, this is because he also has experience of holding manager, he feels that he knows the role well and can take control in delegating tasks that will allow the business to meet the its objectives. Such as setting targets for the day with accounts and encouraging customer service, there is also training given at quiet periods of the day, he encourages input on decisions from the rest of the team, this means that there is strong communication throughout the team this reflects on the service giving to the customer. Recently there has been an idea discussed as the team and put forward, this is to have a certain subject each week that is discussed with each member of the team and training is provided. This means that the team is kept up to date with knowledge and perfects areas such as the refund policy. The deputy also has a consultative style because as mentioned there is always a lot of discussion with all the team, any ideas that are put forward to the deputy are discussed in regular team meetings. Before any major decisions are made the deputy always makes sure that the team are consulted. At the college Pauline Moss the head of the school of business and management was interviewed on which style she feels she has adopted. She feels that she has an consultative style, this is because all the staff are professional people and can perform most tasks on their own, although everybody discusses matters in meetings and at the end of working days. The head of student services Val Craske was interviewed to find out what management style she uses in her job role. She feels that in different daily activities she uses parts of all the management styles, but mostly uses democratic management style. This is true for Val needs to have good interpersonal skills in her job as she supports all students in learning support, welfare and counselling. As she is the head she needs to give the responsibility to the employees to make their own decisions for the student’s well being, so decisions are made together in this department. The curriculum leader for the AVCE course in the school of business and management Alieen Silvester was interviewed on the management style she feels she has adopted. In her job role she feels she uses democratic style most this is because she has a huge sense of empowerment through her role, all the members of the team work as individuals and are left to their own responsibilities in through the working day. As they all have different type of lessons to teach. Although Alieen does use another management style when she feels it is necessary, this is when for example exam entries are urgent so she tells the members of the team what is needed and when for.
