Management training, shows Feedback is a skill that can be learnt

By: Frank OTools

Feedback is a gift at least that is what it is meant to be. On management training courses all over the world we hear about the importance of giving feedback to staff members and indeed with the advent of 360 degree feedback, we now also hear of the importance of receiving feedback.

However if feedback is not delivered correctly it can not only be a poor management tool but also a dangerous management tool. There are several steps needed to offer effective feedback to staff members. Good management training courses will definitely spend some time on these steps as they are a vital part of the managers armory when dealing with staff
The first thing to remember about giving feedback to staff is it must be TIMELY

In other words it s no good waiting for the next staff appraisal to give feedback, generally feedback should be an ongoing part of management and training staff members and as such should be delivered as soon as possible after or during the event, you are giving feedback on. We have all heard of the story ‘wait till your father gets home, the child is then chastised or praised by the father hours/days or indeed weeks after the event. The child is then confused as to what the feedback is even about. We as managers must learn through our management training that this does not work.

If feedback is being used to correct a problem this should be carried out in privacy, the key to remember is praise anywhere and reprimand in private

When giving feedback you must be specific there is no point saying to a customer service call centre representative ‘that phone call was weak’. Rather, be specific say something like I was not happy with that last call, and these are the reasons why…..on future calls there are a few key steps that you can take
to ensure that this does not happen again. They are……

Choose your words carefully when giving feedback, management training courses reveal that receiving feedback can be scary for some people although the opposite also applies, it can be motivational. Either way it is important to choose your words carefully.
Management training will help any managers to understand the importance of delivering feedback effectively. The comments above are only a sample of key areas many management training courses cover to help managers become effective in this vital skill of managing people.
