Meryl Streep Stars Opposite Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia

Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia plays Sam Carmichael, and the role is very different from the James Bond roles he has been cast in as of late. It is reported that when Brosnan was asked to play this part in the Mamma Mia movie, he jumped at the chance for two reasons: his recently deceased fathers name is Sam Carmichael, and he couldnt pass up the chance to star with Meryl Streep. Many critics claim that although his role as Carmichael in the film is very different from 007, it is a refreshing change, and one in which he is charming as he sings and dances with the rest of the cast to the classic hit ABBA songs that the movie revolves around.

Pierce Brosnan and the rest of the crew began filming the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical in June of 2007 in London and in Greece. Although he admits he was never a huge fan of ABBA, he states that he respects all of the work that the group has done.

Sam (Pierce Brosnan) is one of three ex lovers of Donna (Meryl Streep) who are called to a little Greek Island by Donnas daughter, who suspects that one of the three men is her dad. The daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is about to get married, and wants her dad to be there to give her away. The movie begins with a scene of Sophie mailing out three invitations: one to Harry Bright, one to Sam Carmichael, and one to Bill Anderson.

Although Sophie doesnt know which of the three her father is, she is confident that if all three come to the wedding, she will be able to spot which is her dad right away. She writes to the men, pretending to be her mother, asking them to come to the wedding, and all of the men accept the invitation, not knowing that it was Sophie, not Donna, who wrote them. Donna does not know what Sophie has done, either at least for a little while. As the wedding festivities take place and the wedding day draws near, Sophie becomes caught up in a web she has made herself, and her mother does, too.

Pierce Brosnan also has said that he saw the show on Broadway with his family in London, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Craymer says that he was the perfect choice for the role of Sam. Pierce Brosnan shot the film while he prepared to film a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair which he himself is producing under his Irish DreamTime banner. Producer Judy Craymer says of Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia that (He) brings a certain smooch factor, and we think hell have great chemistry with Meryl in a romantic comedy.
