As Metallica prepares to record their ninth studio album, fans are wondering if they’ll be able to purchase Metallica downloads instead of ripping cds. We thought it was about time to look back over band’s award-winning, and sometimes controversial, career to set the stage for what’s to come. Metallica was formed in 1981 by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield. It would take five years of hard work and finding the right guitarist before they would get their start on the national scene. Once they did, however, Metallica quickly became one of the top rock bands the music industry would ever see. Their music has been inspired by a combination of punk and metal bands to create a unique sound that has sold 90 million albums worldwide. Along with their success has come recognition from the music industry, including 7 Grammy Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, 2 American Music Awards, and 2 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2000, Metallica was at the forefront of fighting free song file sharing and music piracy. Lars Ulrich even testified before Congress on the matter of copyright infringement. Eventually, the industry would see major changes in file sharing, with users now having the option of purchasing songs digitally instead of risking lawsuits from sharing illegally. It took some time for the band to get on board, but fans are now able to purchase Metallica downloads and rock out to them on their digital audio players. After recording the new album, the band will set out on a European tour. The tour is appropriately labeled the “Sick of the Studio” tour and will take place in July. The album is also expected to be released this summer and hopefully fans will be able to purchase Metallica downloads in this digital age.
