Mylar – Trade Name for boPET Film

By: subodh

History of boPET: -

Mylar and Melinex are two brand names that are used in US and Britain by variety of companies. These are used to represent polyester films and PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) films. So these are known as Mylar film. These films are developed by DuPont. These sheets were originally developed in 1950’s. These sheets were first time used in Echo Satellites by NASA. These were launched in 1960 and 1964 having diameter 100 feet and having thickness .005 inches.

Properties: -

These sheets have very high strength power, chemical stability, transparency, insulation properties, reflective, electric insulation, dimension stability and stretch ability. These sheets also have gas and aroma barrier property. Because of all these properties these are used in every industry. It will keep its properties even in extreme conditions from -73.33 to 148.88 degree Celsius temperature. It can be used for many long years as it is more durable. These sheets act as water resistance and remain unaffected by greases, oil etc.

Manufacturing: -

It is made from molten polyethylene terephthalate (pet). It is turned over on roll at moderate temperature. Then it is drawn using rollers in direction of travel. In biaxial it is drawn in direction of travel and orthogonal direction to it. It can be drawn into many other directions too but for that we need more advance technology. It is typically drawn into 4 directions. Drawing is done using heated rollers and drawn in transverse direction. After drawing it is then crystallized at 200 degree centigrade temperature to prevent shrinking of film. It locks the molecular orientation. Young’s modulus for PET film is 4GPa. This is responsible for its high strength and stiffness. The film has excellent clarity because boundary molecules grow rapidly and nearby remain smaller than wave of light. We can add additives during making of film to gain more properties. If we don’t add any additive then it make film very smother. To gain some roughness we can add inorganic and other particles. This makes it easy to handle and increases its uses.

Types of boPET

There are 4 different types of Mylar films available in market: -

1. Plain
2. Anti static
3. Metalized
4. Adhesion treated

Uses: -

As it has several good properties, so it can be used in several areas. This film has much application in different fields. It is used in food packing, covering over paper, industrial material manufacturing, solar and marine devices, electronic applications, graphic arts etc. are fields where it is used.
