"Oh, my head hurts." This is not just an idle excuse to blow off. Over 25 million American people suffer from migraine headaches - seventy five percent of them women. And it's not funny. But there are remedies from nature that can give both immediate and long standing relief. The pain and discomfort of migraine headaches can last between six and forty eight hours. Symptoms are many, but they frequently include acute pounding pain, mostly on just one side of the head. No one knows what exactly is causing migraines, but new published research is pointing to swelling as a major factor. This inflammation can be caused by tension and the resulting stress, alcohol, chocolate, hormones (particularly when a woman is ovulating or menstruating),food additives like MSG and even presc3ription meds like birth controls pills. Migraine headaches are usually classified as being common or classic. About eighty percent fall into the common migraine group category without an aura. These migraines are generally much less painful than the classic group with auras. An aura is a disturbance in a person's eyes, usually something like flashing lights or seeing spots, shapes or patterns. Some people also experience nausea or even vomiting with their auras. Classic migraines and ocular migraines are often confused. But, although the experience of the aura can be similar, it occurs in only one eye. If the sufferer goes on to get a headache, it's usually not as painful. The symptoms don't last very long and aren’t harmful to the eye. You will find that ocular migraines will impede driving and reading. Often times, the best relief can be found in a dark, quiet room with an ice pack applied to the area of severe pain. Most headache sufferers feel better after a 6-12 hour rest. Once you’re done with the migraine, it’s a great time to start a prevention program. By making some changes to your health and lifestyle, you can have a positive effect on your headaches. Get started by reducing stress. This may be difficult in the beginning, but it's definitely worth it. What can you do right now? You can get started on a simple fitness program and start eating a healthier diet. You should avoid foods that have been known to trigger migraine headaches. These include caffeine, any type of chocolate, refined sugar, carbonated drinks, acoholic beverages, white flour and rice and any type of cookies. These foods can be addictive, so you may have to wean yourself off of them gradually. Now that your goal of being migraine free is in sight, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of your new eating plan. Your diet should include vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruit, lean protein and pure water. And, to reduce the inflammation and eliminate pain and discomfort, add to your diet a high quality omega 3 fish oil supplement. If you take the time to implement these simple lifestyle changes, you're sure to see a difference in your health. May your future be free of migraine headaches!
