Winning eleven times was not enough for the New Mexico State University St. Aggies to retain Hal Mumme. Besides it took them four seasons to amass that measly number of wins. This was further aggravated by the seven consecutive losses at the latter part of the year which spelt the end of Coach Mumme's career with them. Optimism was high at the New Mexico State University St. Aggies home at the start of the year. They thought they will be off to a bowl with the hiring of Joe Lee Dunn as defensive coordinator and the presence of Chase Holbrook, their star senior quarterback. Thus, it was a big letdown when their performance produced a paltry 3-9 with just one win in the conference. They became even more agitated when they lost to Louisiana Tech. At that time, there were some doubts as to whether Mumme will be on hand still to coach in that game. At first they thought that they will make it to the WAC but to be disappointed when they lost the next seven games. Holbrook's performance did not live up to the expectations after being touted as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He finally ended his college football career with eighty five touchdowns and 11,921 yards. There were a number of offensive players who graduated but the backfield is still complete. Players like Brandon Perez, Tonny Glynn and Marquell Colston might just be given more time to shine in 2009. The following are the rundown of the events which eventually led to Mumme's departure from the New Mexico State University St. Aggies. First was the game with Nebraska in which they scored 7 to the Nebraskan's 38. This is a game which is very hard to live down and it was the precursor of things to come. They fared much better in the game with UTEP where they were ahead for just a point. Chase Holbrook, Marcus Anderson and Chris Williams did well in this game and were instrumental to the New Mexico State University St. Aggies' win. Next was another letdown in a 35-24 loss to New Mexico while the 45 -10 win over Alcorn State gave them a boost in confidence. A season high of 125 yards was achieved by Marquell Colston. Another win was accomplished over Nevada with 48 – 45 giving them their second win in a conference road game. Unfortunately, this was followed by a devastating loss at the hands of the San Jose State 31-14. The same predicament was experienced with Idaho at 20 – 14 with nary a score in the second half. The worst was the scoreless game with Boise State with the dismal 49 – 0 in favor of their opponent. They rallied back in the game with Hawaii though it was not enough with Hawaii leading for 12 points. They were out of the running with the loss to Fresno State. The gap was reduced to just four when they played with Louisiana Tech though they still lost. Another very poor showing came in the Utah (47) – New Mexico State (2) game.
