Organization and Storage in Your Home

Organization and Storage in Your Home
By Linda Jennings

Both organization and storage are key elements in making any area or room of your home function at its peak level. Without these two fundamental elements in your home you soon find yourself in the middle of chaos, confusion and clutter.

Many of us fall victim to these results when we lack the proper storage and organization that are needed in order to create the peaceful, tranquil ambience we are looking for when we are at home. Most of us do not function well or enjoy our homes when we let them get into a state of clutter and confusion.

Usually the clutter starts out innocently as just a small thing such as a table where we drop our mail, books, keys, gloves, etc. etc. until we find ourselves unable to find the tabletop. Often it's the dining room table that can fall victim to the clutter as we use the table to do a craft project and we simply scoot it aside and make room for the next activity such as homework, or bill paying. In fact, in many of our homes we no longer sit at our dining tables to eat our meals simply because there is no room for us to dine.

Many of us are guilty of having bookcases crammed full of books and other objects that are stuffed in every nook and cranny either because we don't have adequate storage or we aren't organized. This is not limited to just the bedroom or living room, but the clutter can also become a problem in the kitchen. How many of us are guilty of letting our kitchen counters get so cluttered that in order to get something out of the cabinet and put it on the counter to use, we have to spend an hour cleaning off a space to work?

Bathrooms are usually notorious for not having enough storage and sometimes we start out with enough but over time we let clutter invade our spaces there too. We are guilty of leaving old razors, make-up, creams, and bottles of various concoctions, on our bathroom counterpace or in our drawers. Not to mention the pill bottles that are empty or out-of –date that should have been thrown away sometimes years ago.

Let's face it, some of us are natural born packrats or we are married to them. You know who I'm talking about, the one in your family that if they see you start to throw something away, they go and retrieve it, saying they might "need it for something". Unfortunately when they "need it" they usually can't find it and end up buying something else to take up valuable space.

Clutter can become chaos and confusion in a very short time and then it often overwhelms us. If we are not careful, we get to the point we don't want to deal with the clutter and give up. We ignore the clutter allowing our homes to become not where we can find a sense of peace, but a place we endure because we feel we have no choice.

There is hope. Start small and do one area in a room or one room at a time and clean out all of those old magazines, donate those books that you've read to a hospital or other charity that can use them. The same is true for clothes that you know in your heart you will never wear again but there they hang, or sit taking up that space that you need. Get rid of them! The same goes for toys that your children have outgrown, Donate them to a charity or others that can use them. However make sure the toys are in good working order, no one wants a bag of broken toys with missing pieces. We are so blessed and often we have the opportunity to share those blessings and it only cost us some of our time and we get so very much in return.

Organize those things you use most often and provide adequate storage for them and those that are not used as often need to be put in clearly marked containers so that when you do need to find them you can see where they are and they are easily accessible. Storage options are varied depending on your design style. Check out www.bearlycreative.com and www.bearlymadeit.com for product ideas for storage and organization. You can get something as simple as plastic containers, that are stackable or that go easily under your bed or baskets are often the answer for some items. There are all kinds of storage carts for the kitchen and dining area available that can help you organize your kitchen and dining room. Bookcases and chests are available for bedrooms and offices.

The bottom line is organization and storage can help you create the home décor you are looking for in you home. With the right home accessories and accents you can have a home you are proud of and a home that you love to share with family and friends.
