Parenting Information

By: Jane Bear

Parenting is often described as being the most difficult job in the world and as with any job, you'll need to learn a whole new set of skills. Most importantly, you'll have to master these parental skills quickly and get things right, or pretty close to right, first time. In parenting, there are generally four styles that experts discuss. They have different names but they are generally called the authoritarian, permissive or indulgent, authoritative and uninvolved styles of parents.

The first style of parents is that of the authoritarian parent, these parents are like army commanders. Authoritarian parents prefer to issue commands and orders to their children and fully expect their children to carry out their orders without questioning them. They do not welcome nor appreciate any feedback from their children; they live by set and defined rules in a structured environment.

The second parenting style is the indulgent or permissive parent. Permissive or indulgent parents are generally lenient. They allow a variety of behaviors by their children that some would even describe as immature. Essentially, they let their children look after themselves and they avoid confronting them at all costs.

In the authoritative parent style, the parent is still the parent, not the best friend. However, authoritative parents are very concerned with what their children need and provide them with opportunities for success. Parents practicing this parenting style focus mostly on keeping their children safe, while allowing them exploration to discover life and to make mistakes while the consequences are small.

Uninvolved type of parents often display low love and low limits, they do not seem to care as to what their children are doing and they also do not show their children affection. This style of parenting can easily lead to child behavioral problems from a very young age because the child will soon begin to fight for attention.

There are the basics of parenting that every parent should know and these are: being kind to your children, being a good role model, and always keeping lines of communication open. It is never okay to demean your children, instead use positive methods to discipline a child. You should be warm, share interests, and spend time with your kids. In being a good role model to your children, think of everything you want to teach your children and then just do it in front of them every day. Always remember to keep all avenues of conversation open. Good parenting means talking to your kids about important things in life. Let them know that they can tell you anything that happens to them without fear of being rejected.

Additionally, with the advance of technology and a culture that seems to cater to youth more and more, it can be a hard task for parents to shelter their children and one of the most common complaints that parents have today is that they aren't able to control all of the information that their child is able get. Protecting minors from inappropriate material on the Internet and television is a parental control task that still has no perfect solutions, however parental controls software programs provide significant assistance to parents who want to keep their children safe.

In simple terms, parenting just means loving your child and teaching him/ her to be a rounded and caring individual. Children need understanding, love, and a certain guiding hand, which will help them make appropriate choices.
