Pinhole Eye Glasses - Need or Fashion

By: Mike Lamb

Pinhole glasses are nontraditional method of vision correction. They are also referred as Stenopeic glasses. They are a kind of eyeglasses in which there is a series of pinhole-sized perforations on an opaque sheet of plastic. The working pattern of pinhole eyeglasses is similar to that of pinhole camera. Through every pinhole narrow beams of light enters into the eye and prevent the distortion of vision from indirect rays.
They do not improve the focusing ability of the eye but the size of circle of confusion is reduced and depth of field is increased so that reasonably clear vision may be achieved. Pinhole eyeglasses are basically made up of plastic or metal instead of glass. They can be used to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbiopia (diminished focusing range with age) and astigmatism.
Since there origin they have undergone many modifications. Traditional glasses have flat or slightly curved lenses of plastic while modern glasses have solid, curved lenses of the same clear plastic as used for prescription glasses. Modern glasses are more attractive as compared to traditional glasses and provide better protection against ultraviolet radiations.
Pinhole glasses have many advantages over prescription glasses. Initially people have little or no knowledge about pinholes but they are widely used now-a-days. These glasses are 100% safe and cheaper than prescription glasses. Pinholes work for everyone (young or old) and do not need any prior eye examination or prescription.
Pinhole glasses are highly versatile and can be used as sunglasses, computer glasses, for prevention of refractory diseases or for those with cataracts or corneal damage. Also, they eliminate eye strain. Pinhole glasses are widely used by eye specialists for diagnostic purpose.
Pinhole glasses work instantly and can provide an improved vision at all distances. Hence, they can easily replace very expensive prescription glasses. Also, pinhole glasses are stronger and do not need to be changed until they break or you can use them for whole life time. The only limitation of these glasses is that they reduces the peripheral vision and should not be used during driving and in dim light.
