Pinhole Glasses - An Application of the Pinhole Imagery Principle

By: Mike Lamb

Do you drink carrot juice or take vitamins to make your vision stronger? Have you ever noticed someone wearing a pair of sunglasses with tiny pinholes throughout the lens?
Aristotle the Greek layed down the principle of pinhole imagery around (384-322) BC while the Eskimos centuries later used fabric and wood with narrow slits cut in it as a form of pinhole glasses to protect their eyes from the glare of the snow and ice.
Pinhole glasses work by reducing the number of angles from which light rays enter the eye and directing them along a path to the cornea. When the restricted light beam passes through the pupil into the eye lens, the visual images we see are with increased clarity and brightness.
The medical profession measures visual acuity on a 20/20 or 20/50 scale and detect visual disorders with the pinholes. The device Opthamologists use works on the principle that if you can see an image through the pinhole clearer than without, they usually prescribe glasses.
While using pinhole glasses, never stare at the sun because you will be blinded and you will destroy the retina's eye cells. I would make sure I use a good light when reading. Another suggestion is not to use them while driving because they restrict peripheral vision.
