MySpace, the gigantic online social network, said they have launched a elections channel as a precursor to the 2008 U.S. presidential elections. Myspaces political site is called the Impact Channel. The site, owned by NewsCorp will feature links to the profiles of 10 presidential candidates ; 5 Democrats and 5 Republicans. Comscore Media Metrix claims,MySpace attracted some 60 million U.S. users in the month of December and about 90 million globally. As the election nears, presidential candidates have promised to use internets viral network power to communicate directly with voters. Young voters who thrive on the internet, like MySpace's teens and young adults, have been notoriously hard to reach using the traditional media of traditional communication. Myspacers are given the means to copy candidates' flashy campaign graphics to to their personal profile MySpace pages and to increase the internet finance and outreach for different presidential campaigns. While the Impact Channel is first inspired by the presidential election, it will be expanded to be used globally for elections of all typesand will also include non-profit programs. The Impact Channel creates a unique content space to introduce candidates and non-profits to the site's active young users. Hot on the heels of existing content channels such as music.myspace and video.myspace, the new channel will offer education regarding the candidates, bring a new level of involvement of the political process online and offline, and make available facets of citizenship that they consider important. It is readily apparent that the new channel will play an important part in the upcoming campaign.
