Potty Training Puppies With Techniques That Work Now

By: Sarah Brogdon

To feel like it is hopeless is normal when potty training puppies. You will have to have persistence and patience for it to all work. Show your puppy that you are the boss from the very beginning. By instinct, dogs travel in packs and have a pack leader. You need to be stern when housebreaking a puppy to make him understand that he has a certain spot to do his business. You certainly cannot let that happen.
When your puppy is inside your house, what you want him to learn is how to "hold it", and when taken outside, to potty on the spot you have designated. By sending precise and clear signals to your puppy, he will soon potty at the right place because it makes you happy.
Deciding who is going to help with housebreaking a puppy is the next thing that needs to happen. It is important that everyone is on the same page and will have to know how the method of potty training puppies actually work. In order to train successfully, you must train repetitively and stay consistent. Potty training puppies can begin when your puppy is between 8 to 12 weeks old.
When housebreaking a puppy the next thing you will need to do is come up with a schedule. A puppy will need to go out every hour or two and when he first wakes up in the mornings, after meals, after playtime, after naps, and before going to bed. Write down a schedule of your puppy's playtime, feedings, and also trips made outside. You will need to have the mechanics of your routine in place. Determine exactly where your puppy will go potty in your yard and which door you will be taking him out at.
The next thing you will do is get a leash and collar and put them on your puppy. When potty training puppies, the biggest mistake that most owners make is letting their puppy run freely throught the house. Never let your puppy out of your sight. To keep your puppy in you sight you can put your puppy on a leash and hook it to your belt or belt loop. Put your puppy in his crate if you cannot watch him. When housebreaking a puppy, the key is to have him on a leash when you take him outside to potty. This will train your puppy that it is not playtime but potty time.
It is very important that everyone involved must do the same thing or it will be confusing for your puppy. When you take your puppy to the spot you have picked out in your yard for her to eliminate, give a short verbal command like "go potty". Give your puppy a lot of praise when she starts to potty and keep praising her until she is finished. When housebreaking a puppy she will soon learn what it is that you want if you use the same verbal command everytime. After your puppy has eliminated on the right spot anoter thing you can do is give her a treat.
Having a schedule of feeding times is essential when housebreaking a puppy. A puppy will eat three to four times a day. Leaving food out for your puppy all day is a big mistake that most puppy owners make. Leave fresh water out for you puppy all day....just take it up two hours before bed time. Take your puppy's food bowl up after she has finished eating and about 15 minutes later take her out the designated door to her potty spot on a leash.
When it comes to potty training puppies make sure everyone always keep the same schedule and routine. Consistency will be the key to your success. This will be less confusing for your puppy. Housebreaking a puppy will be less troublesome if you just follow these simple methods.
