Secrets Revealed: How to Blow Championship Bubbles with Bubble Gum

By: Christopher Pratt

The ancient Greeks were known to be fond of chewing gum as a hobby. Other cultures are not far behind in the custom of chewing gum and masticate natural substances such as grasses, plants and resins. On 28 December 1869, the first patent issued for chewing gum was given to William Semple and the title of the largest bubble gum blower goes to Susan Montgomery Williams. Her best attempt was measured at 23 inches in diameter.

The most popular brands are not always the best for blowing bubbles. Companies like Bubble Yum and Bubbicilious have created soft, easy to chew, full of flavor, long lasting gum; great for those that want to chew gum, bad for those that want to blow bubbles. If you want to blow championship bubbles, go with a less popular brand like Double Bubble or Bazooka. They contain less sugar and are harder to chew, but offer superior strength for bubbles.

You might think that more gum means more bubble. You could not be more wrong. To go for the world record, you have a limit of three pieces of gum only. If you blow a bubble and find that there is still gum in your mouth, just work on it more, not more gum.

Pay close attention to your wind and temperature. These are two factors that will cause your bubble blowing to pop before they reach full potential. Be sure to blow your bubbles inside where you can control the wind and the temperature. Too cold and your bubble pops prematurely, too warm and your bubble will sag and go flat.

Because all bubble gum contains sugar and artificial flavorings, you need to chew your gum long enough to get rid of these additives which are not conducive to bubble blowing. As a bonus, this activity will strengthen your bubble. After that, chew your gum until you achieve a certain appropriate consistency where you can push your tongue through the gum to make a pocket without making a hole. Spread out your gum evenly so that there is enough gum at the tip for you to make a big bubble with. Bubble gum turns hard when it cools down, so the more you chew, the warmer it gets, the softer it becomes.

If you want to blow the biggest bubbles possible, be careful and blow slowly. Use slow even breaths, this gives your gum time to stretch and grow, but also keeps even pressure on the gum to keep it from sagging. Don’t tighten your lips around the bubble like you just sucked on a lemon, this will force you to blow harder and pop your bubble. Instead keep your mouth open so you inflate the bubble through a larger hole.

Practice makes perfect. Nevertheless, a strong jaw, tongue and diaphragm are also necessary to blow championship bubbles. Practice and play with your friends using the tips given above. Eventually you will find the right combination and perfect conditions for you to make the biggest bubble. While having a go at blowing bubbles, do not forget to have fun!
