Secrets for Improved Balance for Seniors

By: MauiNick

As reported by The Centers For Disease Control, fall-related death rates for men and women 65 years and older showed an amazing increase from 1993 to 2003. Dr. Judy Stevens, an epidemiologist and doctor who developed the white paper for the Centers for Disease Control on falls resulting in death versus injury related falls says that, “Fall death rates have increased faster than fall injury rates. In large part, this is because people are living longer and many of our seniors now are older and frailer. They need our help to prevent potentially fatal fall injuries”.

It's imperative to recognize the importance of this, not only for your health, but for your life, as well, to improve your balance. When you set out to improve your balance will take some time, some effort on your part, and specific exercises, but you can do it.

Introducing a restriction on your activities because you are scared you will fall and harm yourself will not assist you to improve your balance.

Perfecting your balance will, in turn, be of assistance for you to enhance your mobility as well, because it requires exercises. You will also feel more at ease with the activities you enjoy and will not feel the need to place limits on your activities only because you are fearful you will fall and hurt yourself.

You can adjust this for yourself and you can start today.

The greatest manner to increase your balance is by getting out and walking. Yes, that’s it! If you do not take a walk daily, start doing so, even if it is only a around your house or apartment – as long as you are taking a walk. Consider this an exercise for your legs to be of assistance in
improving your balance. You will need to take some steps in order to make this materialize for you.

Enhance your stride by ever-increasing it and develop your walking pace by challenging it and soon you'll be feeling better and, more notably, more balanced!

Perfecting your balance can also improve your posture and your well being. It can do a lot for your health, including reducing the risk for unintentional injuries and falls. There are particular exercises that you can do to develop your balance. It can even develop your mobility.

Increase your stride by taking bigger steps. Start the ball rolling small by just seeing how long your stride is and then try to develop on that by taking bigger, longer steps. This will upgrade the muscles and ligaments in your legs, not counting that your joints realize better balance and enhanced strength. Growing the speed of your steps is also vital.

If you go for a walk on a daily basis, start timing yourself to see how much time it takes you to stride one mile (or whatever your normal distance is). Time yourself on a daily basis for one week and then

tally up the results. Prepare some challenges for yourself in the next week by dropping the time it takes you to walk around the block. If it takes you something like thirty minutes to walk one mile, make a goal for the next week to walk that kilometer in the region of twenty five minutes and so on.

Keep challenging yourself little by little and you will see that you can increase the speed and length of your steps.
