Shaving oil for Men: The Art of Shaving

By: Peter Geantil

The Art of Shaving Cream Review

I had spent years hacking away at my face – yes, when it is put that way, it sounds more like a horror movie pitch than an article about shaving. But when you are not shaving correctly, that is essentially what you are doing. The damage to your skin is sometimes subtle to the eye (and sometimes not), but many of you know that feeling, as though your face was brushed with sandpaper. Many more of you have just accepted it as part of life, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Before you do irreparable damage, you should look into alternate ways of elevating your shave at home, like using shaving oils in combination with your preferred gels and creams.

I’m a shaving crème person, always have been. And while it gets the job done well, I occasionally feel my face drying out just enough to make it uncomfortable. My solution was to moisturize after my shave, which worked to an extent, but if the air were too humid, my face would feel greasy; if the air were too dry, it would worsen the discomfort. Little did I know that I was going about it in reverse – in order to optimize a shave and protect your face, you needed to moisturize prior to the shave, not after. And not just with any moisturizer, but with pre shaving oil.

Formulated with lightweight oils that are easy on the skin and won’t feel overpowering, pre shaving oil is the best foundation for any shave. Gently rub it on your skin, over your beard, moustache, or whatever in-between stubble you have going on, and then begin to apply the shaving cream. It’s an extra layer of protection that keeps the active ingredients in shaving creams and gels that are meant to soften your facial hair from working too hard on your skin. Using oil also provides protection from razor burn by allowing blades to run over your skin smoothly, and not irritate any areas like dry patches and bumps.

Some of the best shaving oils I’ve tried have come from Anthony Logistics for Men, which specializes in men’s grooming products. Their Pre Shave Oil smells great –it’s a mixture of peppermint, rosemary, olive, and eucalyptus, and really does the job well. It’s fun to massage it into the skin, and really changes the quality of the shave by keeping your face slick all around. Even after shaving and washing your face, you can still feel the moisturizing effects as your skin never dries out or feels damaged.

I liked this oil so much, that I bought a second bottle of men’s shaving oil from the Anthony Sport line – this Pre-Shave Oil is perfect to take with me to the gym. Even if I forget to bring my razor, I have no problem using the single-use ones the gym provides. As long as I protect my face with the oil, I guarantee myself a comfortable shave and soft skin that lasts throughout the day. I can’t wait to bring my oil along next time I stay at a hotel as well.

So if you begin to notice that your face has been trying to tell you for years that it’s not happy, you now know what to do about it. Protect your skin before you shave, by trying some pre shaving oil as an addition to your normal shaving routine. You’ll see and feel immediate results that will last you the rest of your shaving life.
