Starting a Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is a grass that grows well on dry seasons. Growing these grasses is easy. You just need to know the basic and learn how to conserve water too.

Bermuda grass, also known as Cynadon, is a type of grass that’s sometimes considered weed. It commonly grows during dry season and spreads easily. These are best grown on dry areas although it can be planted practically everywhere, even in poor soil. Heavy rains keep the leaves moist and green. They easily grow back when accidentally destroyed or cut.

Bermuda’s life span is long enough and can take the hottest temperature of the desert if is supplied with enough water. It may look dead in winter because of its yellowish color, but that’s only the surface. Fact is, it is just waiting for the dry season anew to bring its color back.

Bermuda grass spreads easily and that’s an advantage. They could easily replace the damaged leaves. However, this characteristic can be disadvantageous to nearby flowers. It is therefore best to make borders on your flower beds when growing Bermuda grass.

There are two kinds of Bermuda grass – common and hybrid. A common Bermuda grows from seeds. A hybrid Bermuda is planted from sods or sprigs.

Bermuda is best planted in summertime, especially in mid-April. If you wish to plant Bermuda in your backyard, it is best to use a powered tilter to dig up three inches of soil. Compost soil is highly recommended.

Plan the layout of your sprinkler. Install the irrigation system together with the lawn border.

Sow the seed with a grass seeder and cover these with a thin layer of compost and manure mixed together. Put fertilizer. A fertilizer spreader is a good tool aid, or spread it evenly with a garden rake.

For the first three days, water the seeds twice a day, at 10 minutes per watering. Keep your ground moist but not soaked. Grass should begin to grow in two weeks.

Be careful with ryegrass attacks because these hinder the growth of Bermuda grass. When ryegrass begin to show, stop watering your Bermuda for two weeks. Ryegrass is dead when it turns brownish. You can start watering the Bermuda again.

Here are easy steps to follow in planting healthy Bermuda grass:
• Keep the Bermuda area small and manageable.
• Water your lawn in the early morning before sunrise.
• Do not overwater. Trim your grass regularly. Trimmed grass requires less water.
• Work will be easier if you set your lawnmower to high-cutting level.
• Do not water after the rain.
• Choose only one season of grass if possible, and maintain it.

Be informed about the difference between a common and hybrid bermuda grass. Hybrids generally look better but may require higher maintenance. Check the right type of grass that will suit your backyard.
