Staying Safe While on the Stairway

By: Sammy Turner

The stairs are consistently rated the most dangerous area of a home for a senior. Every year, many people seriously injure themselves after a fall on the stairs. Mobility related diseases like arthritis usually play a big part in the increased danger, but poor balance and eyesight can also play a part. If you or someone you know is unable to safely climb the stairs, then a stair lift might be a good investment.
Stair lifts are used to eliminate the danger of climbing up or down the stairs. Instead of having to physically walk up the staircase, an individual will be carried up by the stair lift. Most utilize a track system, in which a metal track is attached to the staircase. A chair is then sent up and down the track, carrying one individual safely up the stairway. In some instances as a result of medical conditions, such as a recipient of knee replacement surgery, the traditional seated stair lift can not be used. For these instances, a standing lift, which is called a perch lift, can be used. Perch lifts are not as safe, but provide a valuable service to people who can not use a regular stair lift.
The power source used by a stair lift frequently is used to classify them. Using this as a standard, there are two main types of stair lift. The traditional AC powered stair lift draws its power directly from the wall. It plugs into a regular outlet and as long as the home has power, the lift will work. These lifts are very efficient, but if the power goes out, an AC powered stair lift will stop working.
The other type of stair lift is the battery powered stair lift. A battery powered stair lift is still plugged into the houses electrical system, but the lift itself is powered by one or more rechargeable batteries. If the power goes out, a battery powered stair lift will continue function, so in the event of an emergency, there will be no loss of service. Typically, a battery powered stair lift costs a little bit more and has a slightly higher upkeep.
Determining the proper weight of the occupant is essential when investing in a stair lift. You will want to make certain that anyone who uses the lift will be able to do so safely and falls into the stated weight requirements. It is also important to take into account weight growth that might occur. Most stair lifts can support between 300 and 350 pounds, but this varies by model and make. Most companies also offer a heavy duty model, which is capable of supporting more weight and is structurally reinforced, with a wider seat.
Those who use stair lifts are able to reduce many of the risks associated with the stairs and these devices are typically much less expensive to install than an elevator would be.
