It was only recently when funny pictures became extremely popular online. Before it became a popular online fare, funny pictures abound in various mediums. Books and magazines dedicated space for these hilarious photos and pictures demonstrate various situations, positions, and items. However, thanks to the benefits of the Internet, anyone who wants to see these hilarious photos simply has to go online. Today, there are several websites dedicated from these funny pictures, all of them with individual angles and twists to add a little spice to the age old humor of hilarious photos. Even though they are on a different medium, funny pictures remain to be funny; in fact, its advent on the Internet probably made it more hilarious than ever.

Funny pictures are considered as such for a number of reasons, depending on what the photo is depicting. For instance, a popular type of funny photo is a picture of signs in broken and improper English. Of course, for native English speakers, this can be extremely hilarious. Others, however, are funny because they are not intended to be hilarious. For instance, there is a photo of a placard posted beside a house that says “Beware of Children,” a nod to the sign “Beware of Dogs.” That this is an actual sign makes it peculiar—why should anyone be afraid of dogs? Another popular example would be improper, incorrect, or inappropriate visual signs. A photo posted online has a sign intended to inform guests what to do during a fire. However, for the photo illustration of the “use the stairs” (an advice to use the stairs instead of the elevator during in case of a fire), there are two drawings of people on the stairs running in the opposite direction. If they are escaping the fire, why aren’t the drawings running towards the same direction? Again, this type of photo is hilarious mainly because it exists.

Other funny photos show animals in funny and unusual positions and situations. A popular kind in this type is the LOLCAT photos, pictures of cats doing the most peculiar and possibly bizarre things. These photos are usually accompanies by captions to make the picture more hilarious. Another website features photos of ironic photos, or photos that show funny situations. For instance, there’s a photo of a truck with the sign “Reliable” on its trailer tumbling down the road. The fate of the truck and the irony of the situation make it funny. Others, on the other hand, post clips of magazines, ads, and comic books, and then the posters analyze them and citing what was wrong with them. Again, the humor here lies on the intention. Since they are not supposed to be funny, they are even more hilarious.

But why are Internet users so interested with funny pictures? Unlike funny videos, these pictures offer immediate rewards. Sometimes, the humor can even be cerebral since interpretation is required. Nonetheless, funny pictures can be seen a sign that the Internet truly is a rich goldmine for hilarious and entertainment content.
