What is Data Backup?

Data backup means making multiple copies of data and storing them on devices other than the one that is originally used to store them on. When you make backups of your data, the same can be restored when the original data gets deleted accidentally. The backups can also be used to make the computer operational again in case of a system crash or some other disaster.

Data can be backed up on a different drive within the hard disk or onto external data storage devices such as CDs or DVDs, portable hard drives, tape drives etc. Data can be backed up by making use of much software that is available.

The software may provide you with a large number of facilities such as automatic backup of data from selected folders, proper archiving etc. Quality software can be chosen from among these for the backup of data.

As far as the data storage medium for backup is concerned, a proper one should be chosen depending on the amount of storage space you need, the frequency of backup, the way in which you wish to organise the backed up data etc.

• Computers are used in banks for the storage of information regarding their customers, the various transactions that they carry out etc.

• These days, most of the data regarding the different research that is being carried out is stored in the digital form rather than in the form of hard copies.

• Computers are also used for the storage of information regarding the various transactions of the firm.

Most of the correspondences today is carried out in the form of emails or through the means of computers.

Thus, it can be seen that a large amount of digital data is generated every day. Most of this data needs to be stored for future reference. In some cases, even if the data is not useful for the functioning of the concerned firm, it needs to be stored due to the rules formed by the government of the respective country.

How Digital Data can be Lost

• Digital data can be lost due to physical damage to the device that is used to store the data. This physical damage can be caused due to falls, fires, natural calamities etc.



• Logical damage to the data that has been stored can occur due to power surges or due to faulty software. This can make the data that is present inaccessible and in some cases destroy it permanently.



• Viruses and other malicious codes are responsible for loss of data on a large scale. They can cause temporary loss of data or if some of the data has been over-written, it can be lost permanently.

These are some of the ways in which digital data can be lost. It can be lost due to other reasons as well.

Need for Data Backup

Thus, it can be seen that data that is present on computers these days is very important. Also, it can be lost in a large number of ways. Hence, it is necessary to have backup copies of the data. These will come in handy if the original one has been lost.

Statistics point to the need of data backup as well. Over 90 percent of the companies that have suffered a major data loss have gone bankrupt within a year.

Hence, it is always wise to backup your data and provide your firm with additional safety. The same applies to data that has been stored by home users. Also, while backing up data, it is preferable to give higher preference to the files that cannot be replaced easily.
