The Glorious History of Sewing Machines

By: subodh

There is a very peculiar case of the sewing machines. These are one of the most basic necessities for any kind of industry. Their earlier most use was for the garment factory. It was used at that time in order to boost up the production of the garments. These sewing machines had an additional benefit of making the uniformity in the cloths produced. There has been much development since the first sewing machine was introduced. The first ever, functional machine was made by a Frenchmen, he did this in the year of 1830.

The apparent reason behind this was, his need for such a machine in his factory, which used to produce clothes on a large scale. He also wanted to do this in order to be the number one in the sector. Like any other invention, earlier sewing machine was very primitive in its application and it was by no means equivalent to the present day machines. It was basic in its very design. It used only one thread and it had very basic needle. They were mainly used for chain stitches.

There were very dangerous consequences for the Frenchmen for inventing this machine. He had to pay a much bigger price. His factory was crushed and a murder attempt was tried on his life. Later the craze for the machine died down. It was only after some years that it found a new mentor in United States of America. His name was Walter Hunt. He too developed a sewing machine. His machine was different from the French. Luckily he did not have to face the consequences. Instead of taking out the jobs, the machine created millions of job. The reason behind this was the fact that the prices of clothes dropped down and as a result a large increase took place in the sale of the clothes.

The principle has not changed until now. It is still used in the same spirit as was used earlier. It has wide applications in the factories. It is one of the few tool without which the garment industry could not survive. The only thing that has changed today is the perception of the machine. Today different types of the sewing machines are used for different parts of the production line. They have their designated place and they perform their intended task. The sewing machine revolutionized the garment market completely. There could not be any better example like this for the industrial revolution.
