What to Expect at a Thermography Center

If you are interested in breast thermography, California has a number of breast thermography centers, as do many other states. Whether you are visiting a breast thermography center in Los Angeles, California, or Asheville, North Carolina, your visit will probably proceed in much the same way. Knowing what lies ahead of you at a medical appointment is usually very comforting. When you know what to expect, there is nothing to be nervous about, especially with a screening technique such as breast thermography, which is non-invasive and does not involve the compression of tissue. In fact, nothing touches you at all during the entirety of the screening.

When you arrive, you will likely fill out paperwork, although this is usually done back in the exam room rather than in the waiting room. The reason for this is that you need to stay in the exam room for about ten minutes or so prior to the screening so that your body can adjust to the temperature of the room. Breast thermography is a form of thermal imaging that uses DII, short for Digital Infrared Imaging. This technology is extremely heat sensitive, so this period of adjustment is important. Then, you simply remove your top and stand in front of the machine to have the image taken.

Before your trip to thermography center, you will want to make sure that you have not had caffeine or smoked for two hours prior to your appointment. You should also avoid using lotion or deodorant on the day of the test. Avoiding extending sun exposure is also recommended. Breast thermography should not be performed on the same day that you have had physical therapy or electromyography. If you are taking anti-inflammatory medicine or beta blockers, you will need to stop these medications temporarily in order to get accurate test results. Always consult with your doctor before ceasing to take any prescription medicine. If you find it helpful, you can bring a partner or friend along with you to your examination. Not only can they help you to be relaxed and comfortable, it also provides you with another set of ears to help you remember anything that you're told.

Thermography can detect changes in physiology earlier than any other modality used alone, due to the nature of the scan. It takes a very long time for tumors (or other growths) to grow in the body. During the period of time that they are growing, there are metabolic and vascular changes in that tissue, which can be seen using thermal imaging-- long before a tumor is developed enough to be detected by mammography or felt in an exam.
